ECORAUTO, a New Structure for Managing End-of-Life Vehicles in Luxembourg

On October 25, the non-profit organizations FEDAMO, MOBIZ, and FEBIAC (representing respectively Luxembourgish automotive dealers and repairers, vehicle lessors, and car manufacturers within the House of Automobile) partnered with the non-profit ECOBATTERIEN (an approved organization for managing automotive starter and traction batteries) to create a management structure for end-of-life vehicles.

This initiative is part of the logical continuation of the environmental agreement concluded between these three federations and the Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Sustainable Development last July. This agreement details the obligations concerning the management of end-of-life vehicles, as well as the reporting responsibilities that fall on producers.

The creation of the non-profit ECORAUTO aims to provide a proactive response to the future European regulation concerning end-of-life vehicles, which is currently being discussed within the European Commission, as well as to potential future obligations that the automotive sector will face regarding extended producer responsibility, such as the management of motor oils and used tires.

For this reason, the young organization ECORAUTO is counting on the support of the Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Sustainable Development, as well as that of the Ministry of Mobility, to address the numerous challenges that await the automotive sector. The revolution currently taking place in the automotive market, the exponential growth of electric mobility, and the increasingly strict legal framework regarding extended producer responsibility present various challenges that ECORAUTO will have to meet.

Initially, ECORAUTO will be tasked with assuming the obligations of its members by providing free facilities for end-of-life vehicles, ensuring quality treatment, and taking on their administrative reporting obligations to the authorities. In search of synergies, ECORAUTO will entrust the daily management of its activities to the non-profit ECOTREL, which has unique experience in this area and has long been recognized by all stakeholders in the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment.
