Visit of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke to the Manual Dismantling Center for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in Bettembourg.

Belvaux, May 23, 2024
Press release

At the invitation of the ASBL ECOBATTERIEN and ECOTREL, His Royal Highness the Grand Duke and the Minister of the Environment, Climate, and Biodiversity, Serge Wilmes, visited the manual dismantling center for electrical and electronic waste at the PreZero Lamesch site in Bettembourg on Thursday, May 23.

This exceptional visit was organized on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the ASBL ECOBATTERIEN and the 20th anniversary of the ASBL ECOTREL, both approved by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Biodiversity to manage the collection and treatment of electrical and electronic waste and battery waste, respectively.

The principle of manual dismantling and depollution, initiated by ECOTREL ASBL in partnership with PreZero Lamesch in 2018, is an innovative concept aimed at maximizing the recovery of extracted fractions, densifying the material, and thus reclaiming resources that can be revalued at a high added value for the industry. This also enables ECOBATTERIEN ASBL to facilitate the recovery of used batteries contained in WEEE, as well as those increasingly found in light transportation means such as bicycles and electric scooters, which is one of the major challenges in managing this type of waste.

With their expertise developed over these years, these two organizations are key players in Luxembourg's circular economy. In 2023, no less than 6,000 tons of electrical and electronic equipment waste, 160 tons of portable batteries, and 1,800 tons of automotive batteries were collected through national networks and recycled in accordance with best practices.
